Frequently Asked Questions

How will psychotherapy help?

Many people seek therapeutic help at some point in their lives. For some it may be at a time of sudden change, such as the loss of a job or a bereavement. Others may want to address longstanding feelings of depression or anxiety for which there is no obvious cause. Psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychotherapy is a process which aims to help people with distressing psychological situations and to understand complex emotional and relationship problems. It creates a setting in which it is possible for a person to experience and reflect on their difficulties, including the way these manifest themselves in the relationship with the therapist which develops during the process of therapy.

How long will it take?

Some people seek therapy for short-term focused work to deal with a specific problem. Others want to make deeper changes in their lives needing longer-term work, sometimes several times a week. The nature of this commitment can be thought about with your psychotherapist at your initial consultation.

How much will it cost?

The fee for sessions will vary but will probably be between £50 and £75 per meeting. The amount may be negotiable. This can be discussed with your therapist at the initial consultation.

What is the first step?

The first step is to arrange an initial meeting. This will offer you time to talk about what is troubling you and whether psychotherapy might be helpful to you. You and the therapist may then decide to continue to work together or, if not, you will be helped to explore alternatives.
